Lucian

“I have no words.” George collapsed in his chair, horror written plainly across his features.

A vein pulsed in Stryker’s temple. The wolf stood so still, he appeared to vibrate in his spot looking as if on the verge of spontaneously bursting into the animal he truly was. Hair darkened his features. The amber in his eyes burned with a fire Lucian had never seen before. Blood dripped from his fisted hands where his long nails were digging into his palms.

“What the hell did we just see?” The growl in Stryker’s voice was nearly as scary as what they’d just seen on the Viewscreen, but worst of all was confirmation of what Lucian had never thought possible.

“His experiments were a success.” Lucian’s voice cracked.

He’d known they were close to unlocking the secret of turning vampires, but that had only been step one. Even before he’d had his eyes open to the reality of what the vampires were, he’d hated to see the rejects of the experiments he’d been forced to oversee. Poor creatures, no longer human, but not vampire either, boiling from the inside as if the touch of vampire blood had ignited their veins. Those humans who’d been called in as lab rats—criminals, homeless, faceless people—had seared their image into Lucian’s brain. No one deserved that fate. Seeing them now, on the Viewscreen, appearing just as lifeless, only still animated, was worse than anything he’d seen before.

“You call that a success?” Hellfire burned behind Stryker’s amber eyes. He was close to losing it, and Lucian didn’t know what that meant. Shifters were still a relatively new creature to him. He’d never seen one so close to the edge. If Stryker truly did become an animal in this state, how safe would they be in the room with him?

Rather than meet Stryker’s heated glare, Lucian looked away, meeting the eyes of everyone else in the room as he summoned the voice to speak. “When I was Regent, I was tasked with deciphering the process of turning a human into a vampire. That was phase one. Phase two was to make them controllable.”

“That…was a vampire?” Stryker’s voice turned to gravel.

Lucian gulped down the knot in his throat. Questions like these were taking them down a road he did not want to walk. Even now, the faces of all the experiments in the past haunted him. Cold dead eyes came back like ghosts to condemn him for his part.

He nodded solemnly. “More or less, yes.”

“Less. That was no vampire. That thing wasn’t anything. What the serious fuck are they doing over there in Lone Star” Justine was on her feet pacing with frantic energy, like a caged animal ready to pounce on anything that came close enough to her. She looked more dangerous than he’d ever seen her.

Being one of the only two humans in a room filled with pissed off Otherkin had him more than slightly worried for his own safety, especially since he had worked on this project prior to their alliance forming.
